The Sisters profess vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and have been blessed with many vocations. The initials after their names are O.C.D. (Order of Carmelites Discalced). The Carmelites were originally founded in the 13th Century and the reform was founded in 1562. They wear the brown habit of the Carmelite Order, which is linked to devotion to Mary and the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Some very famous Carmelite saints include St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower”).

In 1930 the Sisters opened Santa Teresita Sanatorium in Duarte, California to care for girls with tuberculosis. Now it is a fully credited Medical Catholic Hospital. In 1941 the Carmelite Sisters opened Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra, California.

Initiated by Mother Luisita in the apostolate of education. They first staffed the Holy Family School in Wilmington, California and have spread through other states including Arizona, Ohio, Florida and now Colorado! They now have approximately 150 Sisters working in education, retreat ministry and health care.

(Women 18 Years and older)

Handmaidens is a faith formation group for single women between the ages of 18 and 35, dedicated to cultivating a deeper relationship with our Lord, as well as a greater understanding and appreciation of the dignity of their vocation as women. Formation and living holiness in the world is supported and nurtured through adoration, prayer and conferences given by the Carmelite Sisters and chosen laity.

Dēcor Carmeli
(Middle School & High School)

What is Dēcor Carmeli… and what will I do as a member?

Dēcor Carmeli means “Beauty of Carmel” which is a title of our Blessed Mother and this title is very special in Carmel. She teaches us how to love Jesus with our whole heart, which makes our soul radiate with love for the whole world to see.

As a member, you will share in the works and spirit of Carmel with the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. You will have the opportunity to help the Sisters in our various apostolates, learn more about your faith and the joy of living it as a teenager, make lasting friendships, and enjoy opportunities to meet with other Dēcor Carmeli members monthly for social activities.

Dēcor Carmeli is a program for young ladies between the ages of 13 and 17 years.

Opportunities available to help the Sisters in their work, to learn more about your faith, and to get together with other Décor Carmeli friends for outings with the Sisters.
