The Sisters profess vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and have been blessed with many vocations. The initials after their names are O.C.D. (Order of Carmelites Discalced). The Carmelites were originally founded in the 13th Century and the reform was founded in 1562. They wear the brown habit of the Carmelite Order, which is linked to devotion to Mary and the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Some very famous Carmelite saints include St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower”).
In 1930 the Sisters opened Santa Teresita Sanatorium in Duarte, California to care for girls with tuberculosis. Now it is a fully credited Medical Catholic Hospital. In 1941 the Carmelite Sisters opened Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra, California.
Initiated by Mother Luisita in the apostolate of education. They first staffed the Holy Family School in Wilmington, California and have spread through other states including Arizona, Ohio, Florida and now Colorado!
They now have approximately 150 Sisters working in education, retreat ministry and health care.
